Description: |
This collage ('mashup') was produced by Julie Frederikse for inclusion in the 'Author's reflection' chapter of the 25th commemorative edition of her book 'The Unbreakable Thread: non-racialism in South Africa'. Frederikse created this collage in response to the 2015 demand for the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The collage is created from a Cecil John Rhodes obituary, originally published in 'The Guardian' in 1903, along with reporting found on social media commenting on #RhodesMustFall, including Adam Haupt's take on Chris van Wyk's poem "In Detention", and social activist #BreeNewSome's statement on why she climbed up a flagpole on the South Carolina State House grounds to take down the Confederate Flag flying there in June 2015. Included in the SAHA virtual exhibition 'Tracing the unbreakable thread: non-racialism in South Africa today' |
