Shifty September update

With less than a week left of Shifty September, SAHA is pleased to report that the project so far has been a great success.

The highlights so far include:

• A successful opening of the What You Won't Hear On The Radio exhibit - open for the remainder of the month at  Alliance Française.
• The launch of the bid or buy online auction of Shifty memorabilia and limited edition artworks.
• A packed house for the James Phillips - Famous for not Being Famous event at Alliance, with his mother and brother in attendance and contributing to what was a moving tribute to a great musician. 
• Another full house for the Voëlvry - The Legacy event with a robust discussion around the legacy of the tour and Afrikaans youth culture then and now, with a special appearance on the panel by Francois Van Coke.
• The Shifty September Thundafund crowdfunding project raised over R85,000! - which will go towards covering the costs involved in putting on the Shifty Heritage Music Festival.
• An intimate live gig with Louis Mhlanga, Simba Morri, Matthew van der Want, Chris Letcher and Shotgun Tori at the We’re not in it for the money: The economics of being different event.

The grand finale of Shifty September is the Shifty Heritage Music Festival : Viva la Différence! on Heritage Day, 24 September at Bassline Newtown, from 11am.

The festival boasts an exciting lineup of artists, with quite a few flying in from overseas to be part of this celebration of the diversity of the Shifty catalogue:

RADIO CONTROL Musical Protest & Politics - Panel discussion about music censorship and political and social comment in music. With live music. Warrick Sony, Kalahari Surfer of many years and probably South Africa’s most consistent and relentless political songwriter, chairs this session together with long-time collaborator, Lesego Rampolokeng. 

A SHIFTY STORY: A chronological journey through the Shifty era - Lloyd Ross highlights the Shifty era’s eclectic musical milestones and their back-stories. The last event at Alliance, promises to be a fun evening with some of the musicians playing the festival in attendance.
