Abstract: The South African Youth Congress (SAYCO), launched in 1987 at the height of the State of Emergency, brought together the various youth organisations that had grown across the country. It became an important affiliate of the United Democratic Front (UDF). After the unbanning of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1990 SAYCO immediately began the process of re-establishing the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) and the ANC Youth Section. SAYCO dissolved once the ANCYL was established.
