Description: This email from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, dated 13 June 2013 contains responses from the Mpumalanga and Western Cape Provincial Departments of Agriculture regarding abattoirs and health inspectors. The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture reports on the number of abattoirs registered in 2008 and 2009 and the total number of provincial veterinary public health technicians employed to inspect, monitor and evaluate abattoirs from 2008 to 2012. The Western Cape Department of Agriculture reports on the number of registered abattoirs licensed to slaughter cattle, pork, chicken and any other licensed meat product from 2008 to 2009; the total number of health inspectors hired to inspect, monitor and evaluate abattoirs from 2008 to 2012, and the total number of cases where abattoirs have been closed for contradicting the Meat Safety Act, from 2008 to 2012. This correspondence was sent in part response to PAIA request SAH-2013-DOA-0003.
